Itinerary:

* = recommend

For our second trip in 2021, we chose to visit the land of ice and fire - Iceland. Iceland has opened its borders to fully vaccinated travellers and is also on the UK's Green List. This is Ross's 1st time in Iceland and my 2nd, so I was a little selfish with the itinerary and planned it around places I've not been to. We rented a car on Day 2 and explored the South and West regions of the country. Iceland is a relatively pricey destination so a cheaper way to travel would be driving around in a campervan (which we will do next time!).

Day 1

Visit:

  • Geldingadalir Volcano, Reykjanes Peninsula - Iceland's newest active volcano that first erupted on 19th March. We went on a small group guided tour (booked on Get Your Guide). Unfortunately, the weather wasn't kind to us and it was extremely windy and foggy. Apart from the hardened lava sea at the bottom of the valley, we could not see anything else. A real shame!

  • Reykjavik City Centre

Stay:

  • Reykjavik Grand Hotel

Eat:

  • Messinn **

Day 2

Visit:

  • Skógafoss *

  • Jökulsárlón Lagoon and Diamond Beach*

  • Vestrahorn and Stokksnes **

  • Svartifoss *

Stay:

  • Adventure Hof Hotel

Day 3

Visit:

  • Glacier Kayak at Jökulsárlón Lagoon*

  • Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

  • Vik horse riding with Vik Horse Adventure*

  • Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Stay:

  • The Barn Hostel

Eat:

  • Sudur Vik

Day 4

Visit:

  • Solheimasandur plane wreck (long 30-40 mins flat walk there and back)

  • Kirkjufell and Snaefellsnes Peninsula

  • Laki Tours whale watching - Departing from Olafsvik. Had a beautiful day for sailing, great views of the fjord, saw some puffins and a sperm whale. Very choppy waters further out so not great for those who get seasick easily.

Stay:

  • Kirkjufell Guesthouse **

Day 5

Visit:

  • Glymur Hike (3-4 hours loop)** Vibrant lupines, 2 fun river crossings ( be prepared to get your feet cold and wet) - and all round stunning scenery !

  • Reykjadalur Valley Natural Hot Springs*

Stay:

  • Reykjadalur Guest House

Day 6

Visit:

  • Haifoss (Need a 4x4 - ended up being too foggy to see anything, so will definitely come back next time)

  • Sigöldugljúfur Canyon in the Icelandic Highlands* (4x4 needed as well)

  • Sky Lagoon Iceland* (much smaller than Blue Lagoon but as beautiful and as relaxing)

Stay:

  • Hilds Fisherman Village *
